History

The state of Kerala has always been the land of spices and that attracted many invaders to the region. In 1498 Vasco da Gama’s arrived in Kerala and exposed it to the Europeans. But present-day Kerala is a united state. As per recent history, after two years of India’s independence, Cochin and Travancore were united and made into one region then in 1956 Malabar Coast and the Kasaragod taluka were added to the region, making it present-day Kerala. Later, the state of Kerala was formed in 1956 based on linguistic diversity.

Even today, Kerala’s deep-rooted believes and history can be witnessed everywhere, the cuisine, the architecture and the temples of the state. One must visit Kerala even if they want a journey to understand the history.

Enjoy Alleppey

Alleppey is about 4 hours away from Thiruvananthapuram and is a magical place. The backwaters would give you a lot of opportunities to enjoy. You can go on a Shikara and spend a night there, you will have a leisure life enjoying the view and the scenic beauty around you. You can go on a boat ride in the backwaters of Alleppey. Not just the ride, you can also watch the boat race which is held between July to September every year.

Visit the Beaches in Kerala

The beautiful beaches in Kerala have made a special place in the hearts of the visitors. Some of the most spectacular beaches one must visit are Kovalam, Bekal, Varkala, Kozikode and Alappuzha beach. The Kovalam beach is the largest beaches in Kerala, it has three beaches as its part- the Lighthouse beach, Hawa beach and Samudra beach. All three of these beaches together make the Kovalam beach. All the beaches of Kerala are mesmerizing and give the visitors a chance to witness the beauty of nature.

Appreciate the wildlife

If you are a wildlife lover and would like to see animals in their natural settings, then Kerala is the best place for you. Visit the Periyar wildlife sanctuary and a take a jeep ride around the area. You may spot the endangered lion-tailed macaque. And if you want to witness the lifestyle of elephants, you can visit the kodanad Elephant Sanctuary. A major activity in the area is giving a bath to an elephant.

Do the adventure

Kerala offers a lot of adventure activities too. Head to Wayanad and do rock climbing, mountain climbing and you can even stay at a treehouse. You can also go for trekking into the forests at Thekkady and walk along the tiger trail. Another option is to go for adventure sports by the beach, you can try Sea surfing, scuba diving, biking etc.

Kovalam

16 Km from Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, KOVALAM is popular for its calm beaches. The Arabian Sea and the hilly terrain makes this place look inviting. At the southern end of Lighthouse Beach is a striped lighthouse with a viewing platform. Other beaches are Hawa Beach and Samudra Beach. Also visit Vizhinjam Juma Masjid mosque overlooking the busy fishing harbor and Sagarika Marine Research Aquarium which displays technology used in pearl production.

Kovalam was earlier a fishing village; tourism started in the 1930s and became famous because of the HIPPI culture in1970s. Ayurvedic treatments and massages are popular along with yoga, meditation as well as other cultural activities. Kovalam is also famous for shopping of rich spices, wooden statues and handicrafts etc.
