Kedarnath

History

Kedarnath temple is one of the holiest shrines for Hindus. It is one amongst the Char Dhams that are considered auspicious in the Hindu religion. As per mythologies, the Pandava brothers, came here to meet Lord Shiva to seek forgiveness for killing their family members, they build the temple originally dedicating it to Lord Shiva.

The current temple of Kedarnath was established 1,200 years ago by guru Adi Shankracharya. It is one among the 12 jyotirlingas in India and holds great importance for all the devotees.

Things to do (Activities)

Trek and visit the Kedarnath Temple

To reach Kedarnath one has to trek for 22 km. The trek starts at Gaurikund and ends at the temple. The 22 km walking journey is full of adventure, it is not a straight walk, you would have to use your energy to walk up the mountain and then reach the top. The entire route is mesmerising and very scenic with a few resting points available on the way. Though it is a surreal journey, still if you do not wish to walk such a long distance, there are helicopter services available. You can book it per person and reach the temple directly.

Tungnath

Located at a height of 3690 metres, Tungnath is the second-highest Lord Shiva temple in the World and the highest Shiva temple in India. It is situated at a distance of 88 km from Kedarnath. After coming back from the Kedarnath temple to Rudraprayag, you can hire a taxi to reach Chopta and then trek for 5 km to reach the auspicious Tungnath temple.

Bhairo Baba Temple

Situated at about 0.8 km distance from Kedarnath temple is the Bhairo Baba temple. The temple is dedicated to a manifestation of Lord Shiva Maha Kal Bhairav. Devotees who visit the Kedarnath temple also visit this temple.

Stay at Chopta

If you want to relax in the lap of the mountains, you can stay at Chopta. After visiting the Tungnath temple, take a day to admire nature at such an altitude. If you are an adventure seeker and like to trek, then after visiting the Tungnath temple you can visit the Chandrashila Peak.

Transportation

By Air

Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is the nearest airport to reach Kedarnath. Taxi services or public buses are available easily from here to reach Rudraprayag. The distance is about 180 km and it takes about 6 hours to reach.

By Train

Rishikesh Railway Station is the nearest railway station to Kedarnath. From Rishikesh to Sonprayag, one has to travel on road for about 208 km. You can take a taxi or a bus to reach Sonprayag.

By Surface

The roads are well developed in Uttarakhand. You can reach Rudrapyarg or Sonprayag by taxi or your own vehicle and then start the trek.
