History

The history of Ladakh goes back to AD 975, when Lhachen Bhagan the ruler of Basgo, conquered a competing Ladakhi king and formed his dynasty. To celebrate his victory, the royal family took the name Namgyal (victorious) in 1470, and continue their legacy till 39 generations, now deposed.

It is only in the 9th century when one can start seeing the influence of Tibetan culture in Ladakh when Tibetan Buddhism arrived in an Indian art form. The traces are visible in the temple artisanship at Alchi.

In the 14th century, the Tibetan leader Tsongkhapa’s philosophy, and Tibetan Gelukpa order played a vital role to expand the Tibetan Buddhism and its prominence.

Later Sengge Namgyal, the lion king of Ladakh, re-established his capital at Leh and moved to the Leh palace, which he built after moving from Shey palace until the region was conquered by the Jammu maharajas in 1840s.

Today the former royal family resides at their summer palace at Stok and has passed Leh Palace to the Indian Archaeological Survey.
