History

The history of Munnar dates back to the British era. In the year 1870s John Daniel Munro visited the area for settling a border dispute between Travancore and Madras. He loved the place when he saw it for the first time. The area was then owned by the royal family of the region. He then formed a plantation society in Munnar and plantation began there. Present-day Munnar is popular for its tea plantation and its tourism.

The major thing to do in Munnar is visiting the tea estates and seeing the tea plantation and harvest up close. One of the must visits in Munnar is the Kolukkumalai Tea Estate. It is amongst one of the highest tea plantations in the world. Once you visit the Kolukkumalai estate, you can also visit the tea factory to understand the traditional methods of tea plantation.

Trekking and camping

Munnar is a heaven not only for tea enthusiasts but also for trekking lovers. After seeing the tea plantations and enjoying at the waterfalls, you would love to see Munnar from the top. You can go for trekking and camping at the Echo point. As the name says echo phenomenon is clearly witnessed from the Echo point. It is located 15 kilometres away from Munnar and you will have to trek to reach the top. But the journey will be worth the effort.

Transportation

By Air

Cochin airport is the closest airport to Munnar. It is situated at a distance of 110 km, you can hire a cab to reach your destination from there. The other airport is Madurai International airport which is 140 km away from the Munnar town.

By Train

There are three railway stations from where you can reach Munnar easily. The closest railway station from Munnar is at Aluva, which is at a distance of 110 kilometres. The Ernakulam Railway Station in Kochi is 130 kilometres away and the Madurai Railway Station is at a distance of 135 kilometres.

By Surface

The roads till Munnar are very well connected. After reaching your destined airport or railway station, you can book a pre-paid taxi to reach Munnar. Or you can hire a vehicle and drive on your own, the roads are motorable and the views are very scenic.
