Udagamandalam, popularly known as Ooty is a hill station in Tamil Nadu which is loved by the people of the nation and the entire World. The alluring mountains of the Western Ghats, tea gardens to soothe your soul and pleasant weather to escape the city chaos. Ooty is certainly a paradise in the south. Ooty is a great choice to visit because the temperature of the town doesn’t soar really high in summers or go too low in winters. It fluctuates between 15 to 30 degrees in the months of March to May, and between 5 to 15 degrees in December- January, hence providing pleasant weather conditions to the travellers always.

History

The history of Ooty goes back to the British era. The town was first discovered by the collector of Coimbatore in 1817 during the British rule. The town was then under the control of the tribe ‘Toda’ and was known as Udagamandalam. The name means ‘A village of a single stone’ and it was derived from the regional name ottakkalmandu. It became a popular summer resort during the British rule and the British visited the place to spend some leisure time.

Nilgiri Toy Train

One of the best rides to take in India is the Nilgiri Toy Train. This 46 km toy train journey takes you through one of the most beautiful views in the South of India and leaves you mesmerised with the beautiful bridges. The station of the Nilgiri toy train is a UNESCO world heritage site and surrounded by forestation all around.

Pykara Lake

Pykara lake is a very famous lake in and around Ooty. Various activities are available in the lake such as riding a speed boat or trekking around the area. It is a popular picnic spot too. People visit there with their family to spend some quality time.

Ooty Summer festival

Visiting Ooty in summers is a bliss. The perfect weather conditions, the lush green surroundings and the escapade from the heat make it bliss in the summers. To add to the charm, the summer festival is organised in Ooty. The Ooty summer festival is organized by the government authorities and it hosts events like cultural activities and flower shows.

Tea Museum

After visiting the Nilgiri Toy Train, you would be enthralled by the lush green surroundings and would definitely be excited to see the tea gardens. They are the major attractions of Ooty. You can visit the tea gardens and the Tea Museum. The museum would tell you the history of tea plantation and the tea estates in Ooty.
